A joint initiative of the Embassy of Portugal in the USA, PALCUS and PUSCC.
Our purpose is to highlight the work of Portuguese American artists living and working all across the USA. 
A virtual gallery brings this project to life and allows these artists to show their work collectively.

Launched on the occasion of the PALCUS Virtual National Conference 2020, the Portuguese American Artists Gallery is committed to continuing to invite more artists to share their work with our communities in the US and around the world.&#38;nbsp;
We hope this initiative encourages other artists to join and inspires young artists to pursue their passions.

Christine's journey of self-discovery and caregiving is the focus of this series. As she cares for her terminally ill mother, Christine realizes the importance of taking care of herself as well. Through this process, she discovers her purpose and how to move forward after her mother's passing. Adapting to change and remaining open to new information is crucial in life, and Christine finds healing and guidance through the animal-human connection. The animals in this series represent life, death, and rebirth, and by sitting with her work, Christine visualizes the emotions associated with it. Art is her language, and it allows her to feel good about being alive, restoring balance to her body and spirit. Through this journey, Christine learns to ground herself, find peace, and celebrate her life.

	Eva AvenueBrooklyn, New YorkEva Avenue, whose life is a work of art in itself, is a general painter who makes bodies of work in collections, cycles and phases. Whether realistic or abstract, she loves capturing the light and movement of life outside, portraits of people, the energy of the world as it is felt, and visually recreating things that are important to her. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
A multimedia generative artist with training in writing, music, performance and installation, she is always working on something to translate a feeling or idea. She draws her greatest inspirations from the community around her and is always looking for the time and energy to do more, despite working full time at the Art Students League of New York, which she considers the greatest place in the world and to whom she owes much of her current success.&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
Eva studied visual arts at the Pinellas County Center for the Arts, the University of New Mexico, and the Art Students League of New York, as well as embarking on countless independent self-education art missions. Her work is in many private collections and some public collections including the MIND Institute at UNM, San Antonio University Health System and W.R. Huff Asset&#38;nbsp;Management. 	Zélia de SousaCaliforniaZélia de Sousa was born in Terceira, Azores Islands, Portugal. She immigrated with her parents to California where she was raised in a traditional Portuguese home. Her father, a carpenter and mother a homemaker/seamstress, instilled in her a strong work ethic and a moral obligation of using God-given gifts. Creating was encouraged throughout her life and thus planted the seeds of love for architecture and art.
She obtained a 5 year Professional Degree in Architecture (B.Arch) from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and has worked for several architecture firms. She is currently a self-employed Design Professional &#38;amp; multi-disciplinary artist.&#38;nbsp; 

Zélia is a three-time cancer survivor. She used art as an instrument for healing and in 2014, she founded START HEALING Foundation--a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supporting cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and their families through art.

Inspiration: Using multiple layers of trace paper (onion skin) in architecture school


	Zélia mostly creates in the abstract expressionist style, but is not bound to a particular style or medium. She is a prolific artist, continually researching and experimenting with different subject matter and mediums. She draws inspiration and themes from the medical and biological fields as well as her travels and combines these with colors, textures and symbolism drawn from her Portuguese culture.

	Xana Ramos
Manhattan Beach, CAXana was born and raised in Lisbon, Portugal. Her love and interest in Art started as a child, one that was very shy and sensitive but always curious and appreciative of beauty. In High School, she followed the calling for Art by taking a Technologic Arts and Crafts Professional Course; academically and professionally, she pursued her other passion of Child Development and Education.

 In 2015 she founded her Own Business Casinha Xanartes&#38;nbsp; in Setubal, Portugal, which combined both passions. Presented a Concept Space developing Arts and Education through Play.At the end of 2017, to gain experience and expand in Business and Arts, she moved to the USA, where she has been living and evolving in her artistic path and personal and spiritual development. Since the Covid Pandemic started, I found myself, like all of us, with extra time at home, so I used it to fulfill my need for creation and expressing myself, including exploring acrylic painting, a new art field for me.&#38;nbsp; I painted from photo references from Nature, which is a constant inspiration to me, and that's how the collection Zest for Life was born! As patented in these paintings, my Art breaths through 3 focal points: bold and vibrant color, movement, and intentional detailed orientation.


As Humans, we are a collection of experiences, from the country, culture, and way we grew up to the everyday people and environments we surround ourselves with, so after my vacations in Portugal and returning to California, I felt I had to marry the inspirations of these two distinct yet beautiful and vibrant places with iconic characteristics. And that's present in " Portugalifornia".

	Donald Mota
Long Beach, CADonald Mota is a mixed-media artist based in Long Beach, California. As a first-generation Portuguese-American, Mota's work navigates the crossroads and the merging of two rich cultures while exploring themes of identity, belonging, cultural hybridity, and heritage. He creates pieces that resonate with a sense of duality while weaving elements from both cultures.

Mota pays homage to the Portuguese traditions that shaped his upbringing while using art as a bridge between the old world and the new. Through the use of traditional colors, patterns, and symbolic references of Portuguese culture, Mota's work is infused with the spirit of his heritage creating a visual tapestry that speaks to the depth of his roots. 

The fusion of Portuguese and American influences is expressed through his choice of materials, techniques, and subject matter. His experimental spirit incorporates a diverse range of substrates such as found objects, textiles, digital elements, acrylic, oil and watercolor paints. This approach incorporates layers of meaning while inviting viewers to engage with the layered and textured quality of each piece.

Mota's art is as much a reflection of his heritage as it is a personal narrative that speaks to the immigrant experience. His journey as a first-generation artist is a testament to the transformative potential of art in navigating the complexities of cultural identity.

	Paula LauzonDurham, North CarolinaI was born Maria Paula Lauzon, in Fall River, Massachusetts, USA. My Mother is the late Maria&#38;nbsp; A. Lauzon, (Sousa), born in Relva, Sao Miguel Island (homemaker/seamstress) and my father is&#38;nbsp; the late Paul M. Lauzon, born in Fall River MA (a former U.S. Postal Worker). 

My love of acting and film was instilled by my parents, whose passion for film ranged from&#38;nbsp; Spaghetti Westerns to classic horror, suspense, musicals, and iconic films like Casablanca, The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music, and King Kong. 

Inspired by classic Hollywood icons Myrna Loy and Lucille Ball, I cut my acting teeth in a handful&#38;nbsp; of school plays in Elementary School when I lived outside of Boston. Later, when living in Fall&#38;nbsp; River, I had begun my relationship with the Little Theatre of Fall River (LTFR) Company, by being&#38;nbsp; part of the Ensemble Cast of Jesus Christ Superstar and Titanic-The Musical. After some time, I&#38;nbsp; eventually became known for my role as “Aunt Eller” at the production of R&#38;amp;H’s Oklahoma. My&#38;nbsp; final stint with the LTFR was in the production of Monty Python’s Spamalot, where I was joined&#38;nbsp; by my son, Jacob. It was during this final production, that I began doing “extra” work for a&#38;nbsp; variety of films and commercials, in Boston and NYC. 

I honed my craft through Master Acting Classes with former Days of Our Lives star, Steve&#38;nbsp; Blackwood, and continued acting in local theatre and music videos, including The Portuguese&#38;nbsp; Kids, 'Thrift Shop Parody'.&#38;nbsp; 

In 2015, I decided to make the leap to commercial work, and quickly became recognized as a&#38;nbsp; diverse character actress both in film and on television shows.&#38;nbsp; 

Eventually, I broke in to both nationally and internationally known music videos such as, King Lil&#38;nbsp; G’s, Cold Christmas, Franz Ferdinand’s, Feel the Love, Oliver Tree’s, Miracle Man and Trisha&#38;nbsp; Paytas’, What Dreams Are Made Of. 

I can be seen in a variety of national ads from Lyrica (print ad), as well as TV/video ads. My face&#38;nbsp; has become quite familiar in Ring’s, ‘Secure Mani/Pedi’ Commercial, Jardience, Glucerna, and&#38;nbsp; Chase. I have also had roles in Unusual Suspects, Murder Book Mystery, VETTv, Deadline: Crime&#38;nbsp; with Tamron Hall, and can be seen in many more various television shows and movies. 

As well, I have had roles in student films and short films, all of which have been submitted and&#38;nbsp; won various awards at Film Festivals around the Country and at Cannes. 

Along with the Durham School of Acting, and HarLau Casting, I opened my film production&#38;nbsp; company, in June 2019, HarLau Productions and have recently completed filming my short film,&#38;nbsp; ‘Consequences’, by local writer, Matt Higgins. I have directed many short films and music&#38;nbsp; videos.

I am a Member of the Television Academy and a judge in the Burbank International Film&#38;nbsp; Festival, The Raleigh Film and Art Festival and The Annual Daytime Emmy® Awards for ©The&#38;nbsp; National Academy of Television Arts &#38;amp; Sciences.

	Prior to entering the film industry as an Actor and Film Director, I’d worked as a legal assistant&#38;nbsp; and later as an administrator and business developer. Working in the legal field taught me critical problem solving and fast paced decision making, as well as the value of intensive&#38;nbsp; research. Working in business development taught me analytics. It taught me how to observe&#38;nbsp; and adapt in the field and how to gauge potential. These skills have proven invaluable in my work in the film and television industry.&#38;nbsp; 
I have a Director’s Reel (that I’m still working to compile because of the numerous projects that&#38;nbsp; I’ve been working on) 
As Director, I’ve worked on ‘One-Leg’ which I cast and directed, in 2019. 
I co-directed, ‘Love and Lust’ with writer/director, Rebecca Kirsh. 
I’ve directed four music videos for local up and coming music artist, Jessenia Mills. I’ve Executive Produced ‘Host’ as well, by local writer and director, Pat Baker. 
Except for ‘Host’, all film and music videos were produced in North Carolina, where I currently&#38;nbsp; reside. 
In September 2019, I opened The Durham School of Acting as well as my production company. I&#38;nbsp; have also been a casting director for numerous local projects.&#38;nbsp; 
My goal for HarLau Productions, LLC is to Direct films and television series that deal in various genres through the acquisition and development of high-quality screenplays.

	Ramana VieiraCaliforniaRamana Vieira is known as a contemporary Fado artist. 

This music is sometimes called "Portuguese Blues". Ramana's work captures the essence of Fado and well beyond. She performs and records music that ranges from the soulful haunting ballads and catchy playful songs of Fado, to her own original compositions.

Fado is a performance genre, incorporating music and poetry. In 2011 Fado became a part of UNESCO world Heritage.&#38;nbsp; Ramana is an internationally acclaimed recording artist and a northern California native of Portuguese descent. She also is a stunning vocalist, a proficient pianist and gifted songwriter who has composed, performed and recorded many of her own original Fados. Several of these have been nominated at the largest Portuguese music awards organization: International Portuguese Music Awards (IPMA).&#38;nbsp; She has performed throughout California, San Francisco, Los Angeles, the Central valley, SLO, in Portugal, Macau, China, East Coast including New York, Hawaii, Florida the Pacific Northwest and Mexico. Ramana just returned this summer of 2023 headlining in her parents’ homeland of Madeira, Portugal at the Art’Camacha festival. She was also featured on the RTP international network while in Madeira. 

Over the course of her 20 plus year musical career and five album releases, she has opened for Mariza, and headlined at several World Music festivals. Performed for the President of the Azores, Portugal at the invitation of Congressman Jim Costa. Her original composition, “Unido Para Amar,” was played at the awards ceremony for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy.&#38;nbsp; Her music has been chosen to be featured on TAP Airlines, the flag carrier of Portugal with over 2500 nights per week to 34 countries.. Her new album, Tudo De Mim will be out early spring of 2023. Most recently her new single, Fado La La La, ranked #4 for song&#38;nbsp; and her latest new video ranked 3# in North America on the Ethnocloud music platform.

The critics have heaped praise upon Ramana. The San Francisco Chronicle said "Ramana is the rising star in World Music" and "No one in the United States is doing more to breathe new life into Fado than Ramana Vieira, a sultry dramatic singer." Andrew Gilbert of The Boston Globe said "Raman Vieira deserves a prominent place in the front rank of today's Fado singers" Vieira was born in San Leandro,

California with the beat of Portuguese rhythms coursing through her veins. Her parents had immigrated to the United States from Portugal, where her grandfather was a well-known musician and composer from Madeira Island. She grew up listening to American pop, alongside traditional Portuguese music. “During my childhood, I sang with my mother to Amália Rodgrigues and other fabulous fadistas that were part of her special record collection,” said Vieira. 

Early in life, it was apparent that Vieira possessed exceptional musical talent and went on to study at The American Conservatory Theatre. But a spontaneous trip to Portugal shifted her professional vision and catalyzed an exploration deep into the world of fado. 
In Portugal, Vieira connected with her roots and found that fado ignited her spirit and set her soul aflame. She began to study intensively with local fado musicians and had the opportunity to perform. Barco NegroBarco Negro as originally performed by the legendary Fado artist, Amalia Rodrigues out of Portugal. We love paying tribute to the amazing Amalia. This song was about a young woman waiting for her long lost love to return from the seas. The villagers say, she is crazy (Sao locus) but she is convinced that everything she feels he is going to return.
We have put our contemporary approach to this song that was first recorded in Brazil in 1954.

	Eric Jay SantosNew Bedford, MassachusettsEric Jay Santos, also known as Ewreckage, is a Luso-American musical artist from New Bedford, Massachusetts. His discography consists of three albums, ‘Eccentric’ (2020), ‘Ruby’(2021), and ‘Iconic’ (2023). Numerous of Santos’ songs have charted at #1 on the iTunes Portugal Singles chart. 

Outside of music, Santos reports on the Boston Celtics for Inside The Celtics, an affiliate site of Sports Illustrated. He also works as an English Language Development teacher and holds a BA in English and Secondary Education from Bridgewater State University.

Ewreckage - "Crystal Blue"

“Crystal Blue” is inspired by Portugal’s sandy beaches with crystal-clear water. The first few bars suggest simplicity found in early-2000s summer nostalgia before switching to a thumpingly orchestral bass line. It’s a juxtaposition - a playful percussion and pomp-filled undercurrent sparred beneath delicate vocals. The festival-esque flashback is a love letter to summers gone.


	“Ocean” is the staple of my discography. The melodic mix of poppy instruments evokes a catchy, light-hearted sound. It keeps things to the essentials, radiating a warm, inviting disposition. Its playful lyrics are reflective of the teenage experience.
